Back in the Day: Chanko nabe is sumo’s super soup

                                Wrestlers in the Dewanoumi sumo stable in Ryogoku, Tokyo, serve themselves from the chanko nabe pot during their morning meal — actually served around noon, after a morning of practice in the ring. They’ll have the same dish at night. The soup is made by lower-ranking wrestlers, but side dishes of spicy cod roe, bamboo shoots, takuan, potato croquettes, kamaboko and pickled vegetables are purchased.
