I love finding good food deals, especially when it comes to plate lunches. I recently came across three spots that delivered when it came to massive plates that don’t break my budget.
Chicken katsu craving
Griddle N Grindz (1505 Dillingham Blvd.) is home to massive Korean-style plate lunches with choices like chicken katsu ($13.49), bulgogi ($14.99) and more.
“Wait,” you might be thinking, “$14-15 for a plate lunch is expensive.” However, after one look at these loaded plates — which can be shared or split into two meals — the price is right. Entrées come with your choice of four sides. Call 808-888-2372 or follow Griddle N Grindz on Instagram (@griddle_n_grindz).
Bomb bentos
When it comes to plate lunches, Kapolei-based J&D’z Mobile Grindz has everything and anything to satisfy your craving. The truck — often parked in front of Freightliner HI at 91-265 Kalaeloa Blvd. — is known for its dynamite chicken drizzled with Sriracha aioli, hamburger steak and more. If you want a little of everything, go for the bento box ($13.50), which comprises teri beef, Spam, fried chicken, noodles and rice with furikake. Call 808-829-7636 for more information or to preorder.
Fried feasts
Miyakonjo (1763 Hoe St.), located in Kalihi, prides itself on its $10 plates and $6 bentos. The biz is known for its chicken nanban — fried chicken coated in a crispy batter that’s soaked in a sweet-and-sour nanban sauce — but its mochiko chicken is also popular.
Pro tip: Get a combo plate to try more than one chicken for the same $10 flat rate. The housemade tartar sauce is delicious, but if you want to add some heat, ask for the spicier Sriracha version. To learn more, call 808-636-4340 or follow Miyakonjo on Instagram (@miyakonjo_hawaii).
