Recently, I tried a burrito from a newly opened Mexican restaurant. It was so good that, for the rest of the week, I was on a burrito kick. When it comes to these weighty wraps, here are some that you must try.
Some like it hot
New business Alfaro’s LLC (1502 Liliha St.) is currently open Tuesdays and Saturdays, serving up $2 tacos, quesadillas, burritos and more. The Hot Cheetos burrito ($11) is its claim to fame. It features a flour tortilla stuffed with house-made carne asada, shredded cheese, guacamole, onions, cilantro, tomato slices, crema, nacho cheese and, of course, Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. Pro tip: If you’re a huge Cheetos fan, you can ask for extra chips. Follow the business’s Instagram (@alfaros808) or call 831-537-8919 for more information.
Golden state of mind
Taqueria El Ranchero (at 823 California Ave. Ste. A5 and Ka Makana Alii) is known for authentic Mexican fare, with an extensive menu that includes everything from sopes and ceviche to tortas and elotes. The California Burrito ($12.95), filled with meat, fries, guacamole, sour cream and cheese, is one of its bestsellers. The burrito menu also includes veggie and seafood options. No matter which burrito you choose, the staff recommends ordering it “wet” — smothered in El Ranchero’s special sauce, lettuce, sour cream and queso fresco — for $3.50 more. Make it macho
Burritos at Alejandro’s Tacos (2831 Kalihi St., 808-777–0038; 949 Kapahulu Ave., 808-888-8090) come in two sizes — regular (10-inch tortillas) and macho (12 inches). The latter is a colossal creation packed with Mexican rice, pinto beans, cilantro, onions, salsa verde, cheese, sour cream and your choice of meat. My personal favorite is the carnitas burrito ($7.95), but beef and carne asada are available, too. For more info, visit alejandrosmexicanfood.com.
