Nowadays, you can find coffee shops in all shapes and sizes — and in unexpected places. When you need that morning jump-start, keep the following options in mind.
A kakaako oasis
Ruby Violet Coffee & Goods can be found within Aloha Beer Co. Kakaako (700 Queen St.). The business — named after its owners’ two dogs — is known for its espresso and oat milk drinks. Its superfood and oat milk option is extremely popular, and is available in beetroot and ginger, ube and ginger, turmeric and orange, and vanilla and maple matcha flavors. Visit them at rubyviolethawaii.com.
Creature of habit
Creature Coffeeshop is a mobile coffee business offering specialty coffee and soda made with a seasonal rotation of housemade syrups. Popular drinks include the Creature cold brew and Aina Creature (latte). This coffee trailer is located within Empty Elle Bagels (143 Hekili St.) from Thursday to Saturday, and at the Lokahi Kailua market on Sundays. Follow its Instagram (@creaturecoffeeshop) for more info.
Time to ‘rise & grind’
Keep an eye out for this locally owned coffee trailer at Aloha Farm Lovers’ Kakaako farmers market on Saturdays, as well as other locations during the week. Rise & Grind Coffee partners with Honolulu Coffee Co. for its beans, which are grown in the Kona region and roasted fresh on Oahu. The business specifically uses the Lokahi blend, and you’ll find notes of marmalade and milk chocolate in the espresso.
Popular beverage options include cold brew, Hawaiian iced latte and lavender oat milk latte, made with Pono Potions’ locally sourced lavender syrup. Rise & Grind also just started to do a small-batch nitro cold brew on select days. Follow the business’s Instagram (@rise.and.grind.coffee) for updates.
