The Big Island’s other morning brew, Ka’u coffee, takes the spotlight at a festival all its own starting May 19 and continuing through the weekend of May 27 to 28.
The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority hosts the Ka‘u Coffee Festival to promote the area as a unique coffee-growing region separate from Kona.
Highlights of the festival (events are free except as noted):
>> May 19: Pa‘ina & Open House, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., Pahala Plantation House. With music, hula, food and tours. Call 808-928-9811.
>> May 21: Ka‘u Coffee Recipe Contest, 2 p.m., Ka‘u Coffee Mill. Includes coffee tasting. To enter, click here, or call 808-928-0550.
>> May 27: Ka‘u Coffee Festival Ho‘olaule‘a, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Pahala Community Center. Music, hula, food booths, crafts, keiki activities, educational displays and coffee tastings. Farm tours are $20. Call 808-929-9550.
>> May 28: Presentations by coffee experts, 9 a.m. to noon, Ka‘u Coffee College at Pahala Community Center, donations accepted. Call 808-929-9550.
