The state should make it easy to get a ferry permit for any private enterprise and stay out of the ferry business. I have no confidence that bureaucrats can produce a cost effective anything!
I’m with Allaha! State should encourage commercial development – but the lobbyists or the environmentalists would never allow this. It makes too much sense, right?
They’re just doing what they do best. Inventing unnecessary reasons to spend and create social dependency of govt instead of just getting out of the way.
I have a better idea, leave everything alone. Who cares that traffic is a mess? Let them all move back to the mainland! The more NEW lanes or modes of transportation they build the more will come and the more high rise buildings they’ll build. This island can’t even support the one million residents on it as it is. If anything, they should let the roads crumble back to ashes to make things really annoying and inconvenient to help accelerate the migration back to the mainland.
Just sit back, relax and wait for the self driving cars to arrive. Unless the new technology fails for us, it should solve most of the traffic issues.
Why? The Peacenecks/Enviromentalist on Kauai blocked the prior ferry to dock. Why didn’t the State intervene back then as it would be thriving today!
They should look at other places that are already running successful ferry services.
Like Washington State, British Columbia…running a critical ferry system like this is too important to leave to private enterprise, just like roads and mail delivery.

State of Hawaii operated ferry…I would not agree to. A privately operated enterprise run under a business model with proper oversight (just don’t get carried away) would be fine.
All I have to do is look at the rail and it is obvious we don’t want or need the Gov. trying anything like a ferry.
Just anther burn job.
Agree, the first thing we should do is outsource 99% of the government jobs to India and other countries. If we’re going to pay for bureaucracy and sheer incompetence, we might as well pay less for it by outsourcing it like they have done with financial, legal and information technology sectors on a mass scale.
What ever happened to free enterprise? Why does any government of Hawaii, have to get involved?
The ferry will turn into another RAIL disaster, except on water.
I doesn’t make a difference, whether it is on the land, or in the air, or on the sea. Leave it to all of the governments of Hawaii, to screw it up.
When the governments can’t have their way, they create more government regulations and red tape, for private business.
PearlCityMan – You mean too important like a rail system? How’s that working for our government? You trust them to do anything right? Look at our road, parks, schools…C’mon man they CAN’T do it no matter what the case!!

10 years later and now we spend $550, 000 on a study? No more rail projects, government get out.

Ohh, it’s wiliki the Union cheerleader again. How’s that $62 million dollar 4 year contract you got awarded from the rail serving you?
Choo-choo bondoggle estimated final cost $16 billion / 255 Union workers working on the rail = $62-million per employee.
Why not spend $550,000 on finding another airline to compete against Hawaiian that doesn’t rip us off?
We’ve been there and done that. Does the past experiences count for anything? Having a private enterprise make the investment and take responsibility is what free enterprise if all about… right?
We may need to regulate safety and other issues that the Super Ferry uncovered. Our neighbor island communities was a bit huhu with people coming over and deleting their natural resources. Amongst other things like fish and of all things rocks for walls and the imu. Do we feel this needs to be addressed?
Public – Private partnership? I just hope it’s not Public pays for it and Private reaps the profits.
I supported the Super Ferry. It helped some businesses and individuals but not Young Brothers, rental car companies or the airlines. Why was the Super Ferry not allowed to operate until the technicalities were ironed out?
The State already tried to set up a ferry system and FAILED. Why spend a cent more trying it again? If a private company wants to try using their own money, let them pay for the necessary permits and reports and build it.
The state should stop ignoring the environmentalists concerns about the superferry. Any study should include addressing all environmental concerns of the ferry.
And what concerns might they be. There are daily cargo vessels going in and out of the islands. These “so called” environmental concerns are the stupidest thing that this state has ever let interrupt this vital service. Nowhere else but here in Hawaii — we can’t even run ferries. Just like rail, this state will screw up everything it touches.

I am environmentally concerned about all those cement columns and guideways that are eventually gonna have to be dismantled when the rail finally fails. Maybe they can use them to make a huge artificial reef. Would have choke fish at least! Oh, and a private company would have to make the reef, cause the state govt would screw it up!
Build a tunnel beneath the Pearl Harbor Channel instead. It would radically reduce transit times for many people.
They can’t even build a rail without buckling before the train ever starts. God forbid these I_D_I_O_T_S from actually trying from build a safe tunnel!
Hawaiian Air and Young brothers will resume the employment of surfers and protesters to remove any ferry service because it takes away from their air and ocean monopoly.
Yep, both contributed heavily to the Democratic party. They like to keep their monopoly.
