Waianae Carnival 2019

West Oahu was swinging, sliding, racing and rollicking as E.K. Fernandez Shows brought its signature brand to Waianae last weekend. Entertainment included Josh Tatofi, Mahkess and Johnny Suite, as well as local school and community performing organizations. See gallery

First Friday at the Hawaii State Art Museum

The Hawaii State Art Museum blended fashion with art, with designer Robyn Yim Pang (RYP Designs) collaborating with artist Satoru Abe in a “Fine Art To Fabric” collection. Singer/songwriter Tim Rose and students by Hawaii Youth Symphony students and alumni provided musical entertainment, while screenprinter April Sham and painter Deb Haugen did live art. See gallery

Amazing Comic Con Aloha 2019

Comic book lovers, videogame players and fans of all things fantastic gathered at the Hawai‘i Convention Center on Friday and Saturday for Amazing Comic Con Aloha, which had been rescheduled after storms delayed its original August date. Cosplayers put on a show of their own as they met with celebrities like actors Evangeline Lilly, aka “The Wasp,” “Power Rangers” Jason David Frank, Amy Jo Johnson and Steve Cardenas, comic artist Jim Starlin, creator of Thanos (“Infinity Gauntlet”), and artist George Perez, creator of “The New Teen Titans.” See gallery

Hawaii Collector’s Expo at Blaisdell Center

The 29th Annual Hawaii Collector’s Expo brought admirers of antiques, art, coins, stamps, musical instruments, comic books and other collectible items to the Blaisdell Center last weekend. Items came from the mainland, international sources as well as Hawaii for the expo. See gallery

Celebrating the Arts 2019 at Waimea Valley

The North Shore community showed their support for art and music programs for youth at the Friends of Sunset Beach ninth annual Celebrating the Arts on Saturday. The fundraiser for the nonprofit organization featured performances by Tyke James of “The Voice,” along with Landon McNamara and Tiara Hernandez. Works by featured artist Welzie and other local artists were on sale to raise funds. See gallery

Craft, a Hawaii Craft Beer Festival took place at Bishop Museum on Saturday. Featuring brews from Hawaii’s craft beer breweries, about a dozen island breweries brought 30 of their offerings, many of them made with locally grown ingredients. See gallery

Duke’s Night at Diamond Head Theatre

The Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation presented a $25,000 scholarship to one lucky student on Saturday at Diamond Head Theatre. The award is largest single scholarship in the state. Hawaii reggae singer Irie Love also performed. See gallery

Super CW Celebration of Life at The Republik

Friends and colleagues of blogger, DJ and party-organizer Christa Wittmier celebrated her life at The Republik on Saturday. Wittmier, also known as “Super CW,” died in January from complications from cancer. The evening included a viewing of her documentary, “The Adventures of Super CW,” as well as performances by DJs Gnaraly, Jem, Tittahbyte and Yoozilla, music by Johnny Helm, and aerial burlesque by Jesa Simpkins and the Volary Vixens. Motown Valentines: The 7th annual tribute to Motown featured Paula Fuga, Kings of Spade, DeAndre Brackensick, Big Mox, Yoza, Maryanne Ito, Izik, Keilana, Mindy Smokestack, Kahnma K, Melodie Soul, Melissa Diallo and Jared Ming. ‘Ukulele Picnic in Hawaii 2019 at Victoria Ward Park

The annual 'Ukulele Picnic in Hawaii featured local and international ‘ukulele musicians performing on two stages in Victoria Ward Park in Kakaako on Sunday. The lineup included local masters Josh Tatofi, Jody Kamisato, Ku‘uipo Kumukahi, Benny Chong and Byron Yasui, Boo Takagi, and Herb Ohta Jr., as well as stars from Japan and elsewhere. The picnic, now in its 11th year, is part of an effort to create an ukulele museum in Kakaako. See gallery

Pacific Rim Cup 2019 Finals at Aloha Stadium

Soccer fans braved the blustery weather on Sunday to take in the finals of the Pacific Rim Cup at Aloha Stadium, where Japanese club V-Varen Nagasaki took the title with a 3-1 victory over Real Salt Lake. The two-day exhibition tournament brought together teams from the mainland and Japan. See gallery

Pow! Wow! Hawaii 2019 Block Party in Kakaako

Pow! Wow! Hawaii, the annual celebration of street art in Kakaako, was launched last weekend with a block party and night market at Saturday evening. Pop-up shops, vendors, a fashion show, food trucks and live music made for a lively evening at the corner of Auahi and Keawe streets, whie over at Wade Warehouse, curator Andrew Hosner and the L.A.-based Thinkspace Gallery Pow! Wow! opened their Contemporary Movement Exhibition with fun activities like indoor soccer and break dancing. See gallery

Chinese New Year at the Town Center of Mililani

Chinese New Year festivities spread to Town Center of Mililani on Saturday, where the Year of the Pig was celebrated with a traditional Chinese lion dance, martial arts demonstration and music by Na Kamali‘i O ‘Iliahi from ‘Iliahi Elementary School and the Mililani High School Indoor Winds and Indoor Percussion Ensemble. Miss Chinatown Hawaii Brooke Lynne Alcuran and Miss Chinese Jaycees court members also joined in on the fun. See gallery
