Casey Burns, owner and head baker for HI Pie, is now selling her signature potpies and poi banana bread, along with other locally made products, out of the Haleiwa Bottle Shop.
Burns opened her mini-market, simply called “Bodega,” in the back of the shop in August. Look for an assortment of chips, dips, pickled vegetables, chutneys and other snacks to complement the wine and spirits sold in the bottle shop — “things that go with a beach picnic, a sunset (happy hour), or girl’s night,” she said.
No prepared or hot foods are available, but Burns’ potpies can be purchased chilled to heat up at home.
Her 4-inch handmade chicken, beef and vegetable pies — known for their flaky, buttery crusts — have garnered fans over the last few years at Village Bottle Shop & Tasting Room in Kakaako, where they can be enjoyed hot from the oven with a cold beer.
Her new Haleiwa location brings them to folks on the North Shore.
Regular customer Tarah Nalani, who works in Haleiwa, pops in weekly for the chicken or veggie pies, and raves over the banana bread, saying the poi gives it a nice texture. Pies are $8 each, and a half-loaf of bread is $8.
Kristian House, owner of the bottle shop, said he’s noticed a definite bump in business for the pies when he announces a new delivery on Facebook.
House, who didn’t carry any food items before the Bodega opened, saw how well the pies sold at Village, and two years ago began having Burns make the food for his monthly wine tastings.
She’ll continue to do that, as well as provide appetizers for various community workshops held in a casual courtyard behind the store. The workshops teach skills like pottery making and pickling vegetables, and have attracted more customers, House said.
Also on the Bodega’s shelves are HI Pie’s mixed berry oat bars and cranberry chutney, $8 each. Other snacks, for $8 to $10, include Uncle’s Hawaiian Ice Cream Sandwiches (made on the North Shore), Maui Nui venison sticks, Aloha Edibles Furikake Potato Chips and Nosh’s Pao de Qeijo, a Brazilian- style cheese bread made with tapioca flour.
All the HI Pie baking is done in a commercial kitchen near downtown Honolulu. Several retail outlets in Honolulu and Kailua carry Burns’ poi bread, gluten-free vegan oat cookies and quiches, and serve as pickup spots for preordered pies and other items.
