Maybe you’ve already noticed the snazzy paper cups at Zippy’s Restaurants, with cute cartoony characters happily floating in a sea of noodles. The design is striking for its lively originality, and for the fact that it’s inspired by an iconic dish on the Zippy’s menu. It’s title says it all: “Zip Min Pool Party.”
With the help of Hawaii artist Jasper Wong, Zippy’s is keeping things local in a meaningful — and fun — way. The cup design, which reflects wall art at the Kapahulu and Kapolei Zippy’s locations, is an offshoot of the restaurant’s relationship with Pow! Wow! Hawaii, Wong’s annual art and music festival in Kakaako.
This year’s Pow! Wow! fest, held in February, brought together some 70 artists, half from Hawaii and half from 15 cities worldwide. They produced 15 murals and other public art, and offered art and music education to Hawaii youth.
“Zippy’s has been a sponsor of Pow! Wow! Hawaii for the past four years,” said Wong. “Zippy’s wants to support local arts, and this project is a perfect way to help the community connect with artists.”
Wong said he wanted to create characters inspired by one of Zippy’s famous dishes. He considered the Zip Pac bento, filled with Spam, teriyaki beef, fried fish, fried chicken and a takuan slice served on a bed of rice, but settled on the Zip Min instead. The mega bowl of saimin is topped with wonton, shrimp tempura, char siu, choy sum, ribbons of scrambled egg, green onions and pink kamaboko (fish cake).
“I think it’s one of the dishes that speaks of Hawaii. It’s multicultural,” he said.
Wong’s case in point: The Zippy’s wonton, he said, “is uniquely theirs.”
“I’m Chinese, so to me it looks weird — a tiny ball of meat in a wonton with a large fan fold. The Chinese fold their wonton into a round ball, so I’m imagining that maybe a Japanese chef was making a Chinese dish. It’s their own version.”
Wong’s cups, launched late last year and rereleased for Pow! Wow! with a new Zippy’s logo, will be in restaurants until the end of April. In May, a new design will replace it, created by an artist from local T-shirt company 88 Tees. The restaurant also worked with the local apparel company In4mation, prior to Wong’s relaunch.
Zippy’s sponsors Pow! Wow! because it believes in what the festival represents, said Daniel Ito, the company’s communications and social media manager.
“Zippy’s likes the beautification of the Kakaako neighborhood, and that three local boys are taking it upon themselves to better the community and reach out to young artists and give them a platform,” Ito said.
He said the cups allow the restaurant to connect with younger customers.
“We should be favorites of not only Mom, Dad, Grandma and Grandpa. These cups are a way we can engage with youth.”
