I often hear people complain that there are too few venues in Honolulu where people can feel comfortable dressing up.
That’s a poor excuse to avoid effort. I have no problem going to the grocery store in sequins or a feathered jacket, but I suppose that’s not normal. So, Vintage Cave Cafe is now providing a comfortable, creative outlet for budget-conscious, closet dress-up artists. You’ll find yourself in good company when donning hats and finery for a new afternoon tea being offered from noon to 3:30 p.m. daily.
Where a dress-up venue will generally cost $35-plus per person, this tea is priced at $18 per person and features a choice of coffee or one of 26 teas, a selection of smoked salmon, Jidori chicken or portobello finger sandwiches, scone, prosciutto crostini, mini antipasti and one dessert from a cake cart.
Flavorful teas range from lichee rosé noir to coconut confit chai, to one of my favorites, Italian almondine.
If finger sandwiches aren’t enough to fill you up, order more off the cafe’s regular menu, such as Margherita pizza, pasta Bolognese or penne arrabiata ($18 each).
The cafe is on the lower level, makai side of Ala Moana Center’s Ewa Wing. Reservations: 441-1745.
