Vintage Cave is secreted away in a subterranean spot at Ala Moana Center, a dark lair filled with Swarovski crystal chandeliers, fine art by Picasso and Michelangelo, and glassware by Lalique and Daum. These days, admission is limited only to those who can afford $600-plus for a dinner for two.
Foodies understand the event/entertainment aspect of dining, while others willing to drop $1,000 for Bruno Mars tickets are reluctant to do the same for a special meal. We all have our priorities.
The restaurant is making a visit more palatable by offering a special French-Japonais prix-fixe menu at $150 per person, a break from its usual $300 cost. Availability is limited to 20 per day through Sept. 30. Call 441-1744.
On a recent visit, highlights of the 11-course meal included sweet amaebi presented with its crunchy, candied carapace and Osetra caviar; threadfin bream with sakura ebi; venison consomme with daikon and a single perfect morel; a sampling of wagyu rib-eye, filet and tongue brick-cooked at the table; and, as part of dessert, Hawaii Jewels, sugar-coated gelee candy in the shape of pretty raw gemstones.
