The beer scene on Oahu is on a roll. Breweries continue to produce exciting offerings, and more new breweries are slated to open over the next year.
The great part of a thriving scene is that each brewery creates its own unique flavors, and that means there is always a fresh beer to try.
Check out these five brand-new beers — right now. Most are seasonal or one-offs, meaning they won’t be around for long.
Find them at brewery tap rooms or pubs, worthwhile places to visit to learn what each company is doing.
HONOLULU BEERWORKS: EL GUAPO
This golden ale is brewed specifically for Cinco De Mayo, but it is also perfect for this time of year, when the temperature starts to rise.
Brewed with agave, lime and cilantro, El Guapo is light and crisp with a fantastic subtly tart finish and a light aroma of biscuits and honey. The cilantro adds a touch of herbal spice to both the aroma and flavor; it is carefully balanced by the tart lime notes that finish each sip.
This year, Honolulu Beerworks has canned El Guapo so you can grab a six-pack and enjoy it at home.
WAIKIKI BREWING CO.: I SCREAM SKINNY JEANS IPA
I scream, you scream, we all scream for … ice cream IPA beer? Sounds crazy, but one of the popular trends in brewing is creating sweet IPAs — traditionally hop-forward and bitter — flavored with dessert-like ingredients.
In this case, Waikiki Brewing has taken Skinny Jeans, its flagship West Coast style IPA, and turned it upside down by adding Tahitian vanilla, Manoa Chocolate cacao and lactose (milk sugar).
At first whiff, this smells like the usual hop-forward IPA. But once you take a sip, you’ll taste a touch of chocolate and subtle notes of vanilla. The lactose adds a hint of sweetness and body that balances out nicely with the hop bitterness.
This is an incredibly well-executed beer that illustrates how far brewers can stretch themselves with the use of fun ingredients.
BEER LAB HI: AMA EBI
The brewers at Beer Lab HI are obsessed with trying new ideas and perfecting techniques. Ama Ebi is the newest release in their ongoing Omakase New England Hazy IPA series.
Here they’ve created a hazy IPA that is surprisingly easy to drink for it’s 6.4 percent alcohol by volume, with a smooth, gentle texture followed by bright hop flavors of overripe cantaloupe, sweet tangerine and pineapple juice.
The low bitterness combined with a clean finish makes each sip go down easy. We’re lucky to have two local breweries absolutely perfecting the hazy IPA.
LANIKAI BREWING CO.: LEI OVER
A Belgian style golden ale with the additional kitchen sink of tropical fruits makes Lei Over a fun and interesting beer to experience. The base is a light, Belgian golden to which Lanikai adds loads of lychee, papaya, pineapple, Hawaiian vanilla and lactose.
The brewers dry-hop the beer, adding hops after fermentation to impart the hop aroma but little to no bitterness — providing even more tropical-fruit notes.
With the lactose offering an underlying sweetness and creamy texture, and the presence of Hawaiian vanilla, the result is a sherbet-like flavor and aroma.
INU ISLAND ALES: HAZY IPA (CITRA + GALAXY)
I’ve written about Inu’s hazy IPAs in the past, and this latest version is well worth making the trip to the Kaneohe brewery for a taste.
The hazy IPA is one of the most popular beer styles in the country, thanks to its incredible drinkability coupled with huge hop aroma and flavor, and very little bitterness. Here, Inu uses two hop varieties, Citra and Galaxy, that provide a whopping dose of the flavors and aromas of tropical fruit (pineapple and mango) and citrus (orange juice).
A super-smooth mouthfeel makes this beer easy to drink while the perfect amount of hop bitterness keeps each sip crisp and refreshing.
