Cookies with heart (and soul)
At Baker’s Heart, cookies and biscotti are points on the path to self-sufficiency.
Sales of the baked goods support Touch a Heart, a nonprofit that provides life-skills and food-service career training for single mothers recovering from addiction.
The beneficiaries come from the Salvation Army’s Family Treatment Services program in Kaimuki, which also provides a commercial kitchen for the baking.
The cookies and biscotti are on sale for the holidays, with all proceeds going back into Baker’s Heart, partly to provide internships and jobs for Touch a Heart graduates, said Robin Kumabe, executive director of the program.
Order Oatmeal-Flax Cookies, biscotti or Biscotti Bites in individual packs ($3.50 to $14) or combination gift packs ($16 to $50).
Go to touchahearthawaii.org for an order form or call 779-7083. Ordering deadline is Dec. 1; supplies are limited. Pickup is Dec. 5-16 at a place to be determined.

Bevy Market in Kakaako offers sandwiches, salads
Bevy Market opened last week in Kakaako, next door to Bevy, the bar and restaurant known for intriguing craft cocktails and sophisticated bistro-style food to match.
Where Bevy (the bar) is a place of subdued lighting for evening dining, Bevy (the market) is a light, bright lunch spot with a menu in the style of the bar’s, but tailored to daytime dining.
“We wanted to do something the same but different,” co-owner Christian Self says.
The focus is sandwiches and salads, including a Lambwich and a smoked salmon melt, plus salads built on jicama, radicchio and pear, grilled shrimp or smoked duck. Prices are $9 to $12. The deli case carries Onda Pasta and sauces.
Coming soon: a deli counter with meat, cheese and bread; grab-and-go meals; and — this is great — picnic baskets that you can pick up and take along to, say, Kakaako Waterfront Park.
Bevy Market, 675 Auahi St., is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily except Sundays. Call 594-7445.
