Work to repair a 20-inch water main break that broke today in Waimanalo is expected to continue into the night, officials said.

The waterline broke this morning on Mekia Street near Kalanianaole Highway and Shima’s Supermarket, disrupting service for much of the area and closing Waimanalo Elementary & Intermediate School for the day.

Honolulu Board of Water Supply said water supply from Mekia Street to Sea Life Park has been affected and they urge residents to limit water usage to essential needs such as cooking, cleaning and sanitation due to a limited supply.

Crews are working to restore service to most customers in Waimanalo, but water service customers along Mekia, Poalima and Lukanela streets will be affected for the duration of the repairs, BWS officials said. Customers whose service is restored will experience lower-than-normal water pressures, they said.

A water wagon has been stationed at 41-549 Humuniki St. for affected customers and roving water wagons are also available. To request a roving water wagon, residents should call 808-748-5000, ext. 1.

A portion of Kalanianaole Highway in the Hawaii Kai-bound direction by Shima’s Supermarket is affected; however, traffic is modified to allow for one lane in each direction. Motorists should use an alternate route such as Poalima Street, exercise caution, and expect delays around the work site, BWS officials advise.
