When Finnish clothing manufacturer Suomen Trikoo named its new swimwear collection “Waikiki,” it was only natural it would stage its advertising photos in the namesake locale — specifically the lagoon at the Waikikian and Hawaiian Village hotels. Lanai High School’s physical fitness team earned the right to represent Hawaii in the upcoming U.S. Marine Corps Youth Physical Fitness Challenge at Camp Pendleton, Calif., when the squad won its 11th consecutive state title. The competition involves five events: situps, pushups, pullups, standing long jumps and a 300-yard shuttle run. Standing are adviser and former coach Bruno Amby, left; coaches Romeo Dinong and Edwin Magaoay; and at bottom are team members Alex Batoon, 17, left; Kevin Ige, 16; Alan Amby, 17; Alex Pascua, 15; and Steven Haban, 14.

About 3,500 ILWU and UPW members joined the Labor Day parade in Honolulu. The theme for the day was “Peace, Planning and Pineapple,” with labor leaders calling for peace on three fronts: Vietnam, the streets of our cities and at the pineapple industry negotiating table.
