Police fatally shoot armed suspected bank robber after Waikiki standoff

UPDATE: 12:40 p.m.

A suspect in three bank robberies pointed a weapon at Honolulu police officers who then fatally shot the man early this morning after an hours-long barricade standoff in Waikiki, according to Police Chief Arthur “Joe” Logan.

Police said he had 41 convictions, including 27 felony convictions.

Officers went to 2509 Ala Wai Boulevard after 7 p.m. Thursday as part of a robbery investigation, prompting the man to barricade himself inside a unit.

Police began evacuating nearby residents at 8 p.m. and sent a crisis negotiation team to try to speak with the man, Logan said at a news conference today at police headquarters.

He said that over several hours, the suspect refused to communicate by phone with the negotiators.

The man pointed a firearm at a Honolulu Police Department drone flying outside the unit at one point, Logan said.

At 4 a.m., officers with the Specialized Services Division deployed “less-than-lethal“ chemical canisters and rounds of pepper spray.

The man came out of the unit and pointed a firearm at officers, who fired and fatally shot the man, the chief said.

No one else was injured.

The man was armed with what appeared to be a Glock 17 handgun, Logan said.

The identity of the man will be released by the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office.
