1 dead, 2 injured in head-on crash in Waialua

One man was killed, and two other people were injured in a head-on crash on Kaukonahua Road Sunday afternoon.

At about 4:36 p.m., two men in their 20s or 30s were traveling north on Kaukonahua Road, south of Kaamooloa Road in Waialua, when the driver drifted off of the road onto the right grassy shoulder, then veered back onto the roadway and into oncoming traffic, according to a report from the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division.

The vehicle collided head-on with a vehicle driven by a 41-year-old woman motorist traveling south on Kaukonahua Road.

The male driver had to be extricated by the Honolulu Fire Department and was treated by Honolulu Emergency Medical Services paramedics and transported to a hospital in critical condition. The male passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Honolulu Fire Department said said personnel stabilized the vehicles and used hydraulic rescue tools to extricate two of the occupants before transferring care to EMS at 4:57 p.m.

The woman was treated by paramedics and transported to a hospital in serious condition.

The other two victims who survived were wearing seatbelts but the man who died was not, police said.

Speed was a possible factor in the collision, and it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors, according to HPD.

Four HFD units staffed with 14 personnel responded, with the first unit arriving at 4:42 p.m.

HPD said this was Oahu’s 19th traffic fatality this year, compared with 28 at the same time in 2023.
