People gather at ceremony to honor officers who died in line of duty

People gathered at the Kalanimoku Building for the Hawaiʽi Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation's annual memorial service and installation ceremony on Saturday, May 18, 2024. The ceremony honors officers from city, county, state, military and federal agencies who have died in the line of duty. This year, four more were added to the memorial which now holds 84 names. Most recent was HPD Solo Bike Officer Bill Sapolu who was a beloved colleague, family man and musician. Sapolu died in an accident on July 11, 2023 while responding to a weapons call in Kapolei. Also added posthumously were two law enforcement officers from 1868, Deputy Sheriff Richard Neville and Constable Kamai and Michol Octobre from 1916. The tribute included the presentation of colors, a keynote address by Mayor Rick Blangiardi, a roll call with roses placed at each placard by the Honolulu Police Department Explorers, music by the Royal Hawaiian Band, a bagpipe finale by Scott Walton.
