Police identify Maui man, 39, who died after shark ‘encounter’
Jason Carter, 39, of Haiku, has been identified as the man who died Saturday after encountering a shark at Paia Bay on Maui.
At about 11:19 a.m. Saturday, police responded to the beach area of 93 Hana Highway for a “miscellaneous type incident,” according to Maui County in a statement.
Upon arrival, Ocean Safety personnel transported the man who suffered injuries from the shark encounter on a jet ski to shore, where life-saving measures were performed. He was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he later died.
Baldwin Beach Park and Baby Beach were closed Saturday following the incident, according to a post on Maui County’s Instagram.
The preliminary investigation revealed no signs of foul play. An autopsy has been ordered.
The investigation is ongoing.
