STAR-ADVERTISER ARCHIVE / SEPTEMBER 10, 1976
In a few months a new machine will be used to test people seeking to renew their driver’s licenses. The
state Highway Safety Coordinator’s Office received $193,750 in U.S. highway safety funds to design and
implement a renewal testing program to comply with federal regulations. The office came up with 80 total
test question slides, and drivers will have to answer 20 of the “common sense” questions and get 16
right to pass. The grant covered creating the test slides and 55 test machines: 36 for Oahu, 10 for the Big
Island, six for Maui and three for Kauai.
