4 more Lahaina victims identified in Maui fires

Maui County and Maui Police Department have announced four more victims in the Maui fires with the confirmed death toll remaining at 115.

The victims all from Lahaina have been identified as Nicholas Turbin III, 71; Anthony “Tony” Simpson, 43; Glenda Yabes, 48; and John “Thumper” McCarthy, 74.

“MPD and assisting partners have been working tirelessly to ensure that proper protocols are followed while notifying the families of the victims involved. Our priority is to handle this situation with the utmost sensitivity and respect for those who are grieving,” according to a statement.

As of this afternoon, 54 individuals have been identified and their families have been notified, while four individuals have been identified but their families have not yet been located or notified.

The fire in Lahaina is now 100% contained after burning an estimated 2,170 acres, according to the latest update from Maui County. The Kula fire is now 95% contained with an estimated 202 acres burned and the Olinda fire is now 90% contained with an estimated 1,081 acres burned.

“The Maui Fire Department (MFD) advises the public that extinguishing the Upcountry fires may take an extended period of time given the large burn area and the nature of the rural terrain. Although containment percentages have not changed over recent days, MFD continues to reassure the public there are no active threats among the three ongoing fires,” according to a statement.

Meanwhile, the confirmed death toll from Maui fires remains at 115.
