The Maui Brewing Company in Lahaina has been closed after a state Department of Health inspection due to a cockroach and rodent infestation.

The restaurant, located at 4405 Honoapiilani Highway, received a red placard on Monday from the DOH Maui Food Safety Branch. The establishment must remain closed until all violations are resolved and the health department allows the restaurant to reopen.

During the inspection, the DOH found “abundance of evidence of a rodent and cockroach infestation.

“Rodent droppings and live cockroach activity were observed throughout the establishment, including on food items including pizza dough, in refrigeration units where food is stored and on food contact surfaces where food is prepared,” the DOH said in a news release. “Live cockroach activity included a mixture of adult, juvenile and un-hatched egg cases, indicating an active population. Two dead rodents were also observed in rodent traps within the downstairs food storage room during the inspection.”

The restaurant was also cited for holes and openings where pests can enter, build-up of grease and food debris; clutter that can harbor pests; and a lack of soap and paper towels.

Maui Brewing Company issued an emailed statement Wednesday that it would temporarily close the restaurant for deep cleaning and sanitization, and hire additional pest control services to control the issue.

“First and foremost, we take this matter very seriously,” said CEO and co-founder Garrett Marrero in an email. “We failed in meeting our own stringent guidelines and have taken the steps to rectify the situation. For context, it’s important to note the age of the Kahana building and the closures of several businesses before and during COVID have left vacancies where pests have multiplied. We recently purchased the unit next door in order to build a brand-new Maui Brewing concept in the Center that is our birthplace, and completed a massive demolition, tearing everything out down to the studs. This caused intrusions of pests into other areas of the center including our existing unit. We have been working round the clock with a goal, pending inspection, to reopen as soon as we’re confident that we have a sparkling clean and safe environment to serve our guests. Again, we own the situation and are sorry for any inconvenience. We will continue to live to our high standards and look forward to serving our guests soon.”

A follow-up inspection is scheduled for Wednesday.
