Brush fire in hills contained above Hana Highway
UPDATE: 2:03 p.m.
Maui firefighters have 100% contained a fire that burned approximately 1 acre of brush and vegetation above Hana Highway, according to a news release.
According to the Maui Fire Department, access was difficult due to steep terrain along with rocks and logs rolling onto the roadway. Crews accessed the area as best as they could overnight and an Air 1 helicopter conducted water drops at first light into the least accessible areas.
Personnel remains on the scene to complete the mop-up. No injuries have been reported.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

Hana Highway continues to be closed today as firefighters continue to battle a brush fire in the hills above the roadway, Maui officials said.
Maui police closed the highway at mile post 8 on Saturday “due to fire embers” as the Maui Fire Department responded, officials said.
They said the fire is on the mauka side of the roadway far up into the mountain.
