A diverse crowd of Nichiren Shoshu Soka Gakkai Academy members filled a recent weekend in Waikiki with a slew of events, including a parade, fireworks displays and a Polynesian village exhibit at Fort DeRussy. Among the highlights for the 20,000 members were the International Show and Water Festival and the Spirit of ’76 Pre-Bicentennial Pageant, both held on an offshore floating stage.

Sen. Hiram L. Fong sits for sculptor Henry Berge for the final touches on his life-size sculpture that will be placed in the National Historical Wax Museum in Washington, D.C. Fong, the first U.S. senator of Chinese ancestry, will join 125 other historic figures in the museum.

Honolulu officials say they are experimenting with an all-way pedestrian crossing at Kalakaua and Seaside avenues as part of the city’s effort to spruce up Waikiki. The markings are known as the Barnes Dance after Henry Barnes, a traffic engineer who popularized the configuration.
