The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate Wednesday’s tour helicopter crash in a lava field on Hawaii island that seriously injured two people.

A Bell 407 helicopter occupied by six people — five passengers and a pilot — crashed on a lava field between the Ranchos subdivision and South Point Road at about 5:29 p.m., according to the Hawaii County Fire Department.

K&S Helicopters, doing business as Paradise Helicopters, was operating the sightseeing tour that departed Kona International Airport at about 5:01 p.m., the NTSB said.

One of the occupants, a 19-year-old woman, was flown to Kona Community Hospital after she sustained serious injuries in the crash.

A county spokesman said the pilot described to be in his 50s had been trapped but was later extracted and was in serious but stable condition.

The fire department noted the other occupants were also taken via ambulance to the hospital.

Firefighters extricated three people — an 18-year-old woman, a 19-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man — who walked to waiting medics, the fire department said. A 48-year-old man also walked from the crash site.

In a statement, Calvin Dorn of K&S Helicopters said, “The care of our passengers, crew members, and their families is our highest priority.” Dorn said the company is cooperating with authorities.

The lava field is more than a mile from the nearest road, so rescuers reached the crash site in two helicopters, Hawaii County Assistant Fire Chief Darwin Okinaka said. Despite the injuries, he said the crash could have been much worse.

Hawaii County Mayor Mitch Roth said he was awaiting updates on their conditions, and other information, including what might have caused the crash.

An NTSB investigator is expected to travel to Hawaii to examine the wreckage once it is recovered.
