Honolulu Community College students race down Kapalama Canal on rafts made of recycled junk, giving new meaning to the terms “flotsam” and “jetsam.” The race is part of HCC’s participation in National Vocational Education Week, which also includes exhibits, lectures and films.

This strange sight along Salt Lake Boulevard is really a telescope trained on the sky for International Geophysical Year observations. It has a special moon camera which will photograph the moon together with stars for the first time. The building is part of a world station established near Pearl Harbor by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey.

STAR-ADVERTISER ARCHIVE / OCTOBER 12, 1959

The first passenger train to operate in Hawaii in more than a decade was christened Pegasus by Scott Banning, 10, then chugged in Disneyland fashion for 155 feet. Scott’s father, James L. Banning, built the 1-inch-scale model train and held an initial run in the backyard of his Dowsett Highlands home.

The Ka Lae a Manu heiau in Wailua, Kauai, is one of the few restored heiau in Hawaii. Lono Kelekoma, a descendant of retainers of King Kaumuali‘i, stands in front of the grass house in which the heiau’s kahuna lived. Kelekoma helped to restore the heiau with the Kauai Historical Society.

Dunes nightclub on Nimitz Highway has not closed down completely, as has been reported, but is temporarily shuttered for remodeling, according to owner Jack Cione. Cione said the club had earlier closed down after being described as “off-limits” by the Hawaii Armed Forces Disciplinary Control Board to the more than 50,000 service members stationed in the isles.
