Two people died, including a 7-year-old girl, after an allegedly drunk driver struck a parked vehicle in Nanakuli on Saturday.

According to the Honolulu Police Department’s Vehicular Homicide Division, a 27-year-old male was traveling northeast on Haleakala Avenue at a high rate of speed when he lost control and collided with a parked vehicle around 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services said it received a call at 10:48 p.m. and responded to the intersection of Haleakala and Mokiawa St. Upon arrival, EMS discovered a 17-year-old female with “multi-system trauma” and performed life-saving treatment at the scene before transporting the girl to a nearby trauma facility.

HPD said the teen was a pedestrian in the area at the time of the crash.

Two other females — a 38-year-old and the 7-year-old girl — were in the parked vehicle when it was struck and pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.

Police said the 27-year-old was arrested at the scene for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant along with two counts of first degree negligent homicide.

HPD said speed and alcohol appear to be contributing factors in the crash; it is currently unknown if drugs played a role. An investigation continues.

The deaths are the tenth and eleventh traffic fatalities on Oahu in 2022, compared to seven at the same time last year.
