A 48-year-old homeless woman has died after being assaulted Tuesday night on the grounds of the Kapolei police station, allegedly by a man who had been released after being arrested for suspicion of punching a police officer.

Honolulu police said officers responded to a report of a man standing over a woman on the grounds of the station on Kamokila Boulevard. Officers arrived and discovered an unresponsive woman who appeared to be badly beaten, police said.

She was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police arrested a 35-year-old man, identified as Michael K. Armstrong, at the scene on suspicion of second-degree murder.

The victim and suspect did not know one another, police said.

Police arrested Armstrong the night before in a separate case for allegedly assaulting a Honolulu police officer and another person in Mililani.

Police said the officer was talking to the person when Armstrong punched the officer in the head and challenged him to a fight.

He was arrested at the scene on Maealani Place at 9:45 p.m. Monday for investigation of first-degree assault against a law enforcement officer and third-degree assault. It was not immediately clear why Armstrong was released from police custody by the next day.

Court records show Armstrong has a history of mental health issues and was acquitted in 2007 by reason of insanity in a felony burglary, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and theft case on Hawaii island.
