Delia Sabanal and Joshua Vanaman both had dreams that they were working toward. Sabanal, who was employed as a nurse at The Queen’s Medical Center, always wanted to own a food truck or restaurant.
“I love cooking. I started years ago, specializing in lau lau, pastele, pastele stew and homemade chicharon,” she recalls.
Meanwhile, Vanaman, who was working as a furniture installer, was building a food truck when fate got in the way.
“He got into a bad dirt bike accident, so with bills piling up, he had no choice but to sell his food truck,” Sabanal explains.
The two hadn’t met yet, but their dreams would eventually converge and come to fruition. Once they crossed paths, Sabanal shared her dream of owning a food truck. Vanaman was supportive, so she quit her day job, took her retirement fund and invested in a food truck. Vanaman got to work building it and J&Dz Mobile Grindz was born.
Sabanal’s love of cooking shines through the menu. Popular choices include the homemade hamburger steak plate ($12), which includes two 4.5-ounce patties, two scoops of rice, potato mac salad, J&Dz’s homemade gravy and grilled onions.
Another favorite is the dynamite chicken plate ($13) that features boneless Southern fried chicken topped with a homemade Sriracha aioli, teriyaki sauce and furikake.
For those who have a hard time making decisions, the big bento box ($14) is the perfect choice. Dig into boneless Southern fried chicken, homemade marinated teri beef, Spam and fried noodles topped with fishcake, char siu and green onions.
“It consists of a little bit of everything and aloha in every bite,” Sabanal says.
