Chimpanzee at Honolulu Zoo euthanized due to age-related complications
A 48-year-old chimpanzee at the Honolulu Zoo named Roscoe has been euthanized due to complications associated with age, the zoo announced today.
The chimpanzee was monitored by veterinarians, curators and keepers as his condition “deteriorated over the past few months,” the zoo said in a news release.
Roscoe arrived at the Honolulu Zoo from the Saint Louis Zoo in 1994 along with six other chimpanzees. He was described as the protector of his troop, especially of the females. He sired six chimpanzees — Hugo and Konakona at Saint Louis, and Tatu, Kibale, Kealoha and Nalu in Honolulu.
Chimpanzees are found in Central and West Africa and are endangered. Their average life expectancy ranges from 32-40 years in captivity.
