Honolulu police fatally shoot machete-wielding suspect who allegedly rushed officers after severing man’s finger in Kalihi
UPDATE: 1:30 p.m.
Honolulu police fatally shot a 41-year-old man after he allegedly severed a man’s pinky finger with a machete and rushed toward a police officer with the large knife near a game room in Kalihi early today, according to bystanders and police.
Bystanders said they first heard a man screaming in pain early this morning in the 1300 block of N. School St.
In an interview with the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Charise Kekawa, said a man assaulted her 33-year-old boyfriend, cutting off his pinky finger. He was taken to Queen’s Medical Center where doctors were attempting to reattach his finger.
Police responded to the scene before 2:30 a.m. and ordered the suspect to drop the machete.
At a news conference this afternoon, interim Police Chief Rade Vanic said the suspect did not comply with the officers’ repeated commands.

Instead, the suspect raised the machete over his head and rushed toward the officer and two officers fired their weapons, Vanic said.
The suspect was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital in critical condition where he died.
His name has yet to be released by the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office.
The police officers did not sustain any injuries.
The two officers who discharged their firearms have six years and 20 years of service, respectively, with the police department. Both will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
Body-camera footage will not be released at this time due to pending investigation, Vanic said.
“It will be released at an appropriate time in the future,” he said. “It will probably be in coordination with the prosecutor until a determination is made whether or not this investigation will move forward for prosecution.”
