A 39-year-old Puna man was charged this afternoon in the attempted murder of his former long-term girlfriend, a 39-year-old woman, at a Pahoa home on Thursday, Hawaii County police announced.

Detectives, after conferring with prosecutors, charged Frank William Funes with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree burglary and abuse of a family or household member.

The incident occurred Thursday night. Shortly after 10:15 p.m., police responded to a reported stabbing at a home on Opae Street in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision.

Patrol officers learned, while en route to the scene, that the suspect left the house in a Mazda multipurpose vehicle. Officers found the vehicle heading up Kahakai Boulevard and stopped the vehicle.

They detained Funes, the driver of the vehicle, while other officers were sent to the scene to investigate.

Officers at the scene found a 39-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds to her upper body. She was taken by ambulance to the Hilo Medical Center in critical condition.

The woman and the couple’s teenage son, who was present during the stabbing, identified Funes as the perpetrator.

Police then arrested Funes.

Detectives learned Funes was no longer living in the home, broke into the home through a window, entered the woman’s bedroom and stabbed h er with a large knife as she lay in bed, police said.

Detectives obtained search warrants to search the home and the Mazda.

The woman remains hospitalized in stable condition.
