Public advised to stay out of water near Kahuku wastewater plant after discharge
Tuesday’s sewage spill at the Kahuku Wastewater Treatment plant on Oahu’s North Shore was contained at 3:45 p.m., the city Department of Environmental Services announced Tuesday evening, adding that cleanup and recovery is in progress.
The department said an estimated 8,200 gallons of partially treated wastewater from a secondary clarifier spilled partly within the plant and partly on the grounds of the James Campbell Wildlife Refuge.
The state Department of Health was notified along with the Refuge manager, and warning signs and water sampling were to be determined this morning, the announcement said.
The health department’s clean water branch issued an advisory warning the public to stay out of coastal waters fronting the plant, located at 56-701 Kamehameha Highway, stating warning signs would be posted, and the public is advised to remain out of the ocean and streams around the plant until signs have been removed.
