Clouds, trades expected to turn windy in Hawaii by Wednesday

Trades remain breezy today, but become windy by Veterans Day Wednesday, forecasters said, as a high pressure system to the northeast moves closer to Hawaii, which may require a wind advisory for portions of the state.

The National Weather Service said breezy trades should remain in place across the island chain through Tuesday, then ramp up to windy levels Tuesday night, with windy conditions holding in place through Thursday.

Today’s forecast is mostly cloudy, with likely windward showers, and highs from 83 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit as a band of low clouds and showers moves across the island chain. Tonight will be mostly cloudy, as well, with lows from 70 to 75.

Trade winds range from 15 to 25 mph today and tonight.

Surf is expected to rise for north, west and east facing shores this week as strengthening trades create rough and choppy sea conditions this week.

Surf on north facing shores at 3 to 5 feet today is expected to reach 4 to 5 feet Tuesday, and surf along west facing shores rises to 2 to 4 feet this afternoon, and then 3 to 5 feet on Tuesday.

Surf along east-facing shores have a high probability of reaching surf advisory levels today and Tuesday, at 6 to 8 feet, forecasters said, which remain elevated through midweek.

Surf on south shores at 1 to 3 feet this afternoon is expected to rise to 2 to 4 feet on Tuesday afternoon.

A small craft advisory has been issued for Oahu leeward waters, the Kaiwi Channel and Maui County windward waters due to east to northeast winds of 20 to 25 knots, with high gusts, through 6 p.m. Thursday.

A wetter than normal trade wind pattern is also expected Tuesday through Thursday, with showers favoring windward and mauka areas, and reaching leeward areas at times.

NWS noted a high of 92 degrees on Sunday in Kahului, Maui matched a record high for that day set in 1955.
