Honolulu Ocean Safety made about 60 rescues Sunday and logged thousands of preventive actions as high surf challenged swimmers, surfers and boaters.
Officials reported that they took some 5,150 preventive actions and rescued 57 people, including 17 in the north, 15 in the west, 16 in the south and nine off the eastern shores of Oahu.
Shayne Enright, spokeswoman for Honolulu Ocean Safety and
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services, said the rescues began just after 9 a.m. when a 43-year-old woman lost consciousness while swimming off of Kailua Beach.
Enright said the woman was evaluated at the scene by paramedics and refused transport to an emergency room.
Just before 10 a.m., Ocean Safety responded to a report of a boater who had fallen and hit his head on the boat. Honolulu EMS responded to the Waianae Boat Harbor and found a 45-year-old man in serious condition. They treated and transported him to a hospital.
Around 10:30 a.m., Ocean Safety responded to a call about a 34-year-old surfer who was held underwater by several waves at Ehukai Beach. Enright said Honolulu EMS evaluated the man, who refused transport to an emergency room.
Around 12:45 p.m. Ocean Safety rescued a 42-year-old woman off of Yokohama Bay who was caught in a current. Honolulu EMS evaluated the woman, who declined transport to an emergency room.
Just before 2:30 p.m. Ocean Safety responded and gave medical treatment to a 12-year-old boy who injured himself in the surf at Makaha Beach. Honolulu EMS then treated the patient and transported him in serious condition to an emergency room.
About 3:30 p.m. Ocean Safety rendered aid to a 35-year-old man who injured his ankle when jumping off the Kapahulu groin wall. Paramedics then treated the man and transported him in stable condition to an emergency room.
The National Weather Service said Sunday that a moderately sized long-period northwest swell is expected to linger over the next few days. The swell is expected to start gradually lowering tonight through Wednesday, with another moderate surge expected late
Saturday.
The weather service also expects a small, medium-period northeast swell to linger through Tuesday, with small, long-period south swells through most of this week.
