72-year-old pedestrian identified in fatal Salt Lake crash

A 72-year-old man died today after he was struck by a car while walking in a crosswalk in Salt Lake.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Ronald Martines, of Waipahu.

Police said an 86-year-old woman driving a Toyota Camry struck the man about 5:20 a.m. at the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and Salt Lake Boulevard.

The woman was heading southbound on Kamehameha Highway at the time and was not injured. She remained at the scene.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services said the man had head injuries and was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition.

Police said he later died at the hospital.

Speed, drugs and alcohol did not appear to be factors in the crash, police said.

Officers closed the intersection for several hours to investigate.
