Father and son killed in Waianae shooting; police searching for 2 suspects

A father and son were killed in a shooting in Waianae Tuesday night.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victims as Solomon Kaleiopu Jr., 65, of Waianae, and his son, Solomon Kaleiopu III, 39, also of Waianae.

Lt. Deena Thoemmes of the Honolulu Police Department’s Homicide Detail said this morning that an unknown suspect fired multiple shots at the two men at a residence off of Waianae Valley Road at about 8:50 p.m.

Maj. Walter Ozeki said in a news conference this afternoon that the victims were inside a Kepauala Place residence and two male suspects in a black Toyota truck parked out front of the home. The suspects got out of the truck, fired two shots into the carport and fled in the truck.

No arrests have been made.

Ozeki said police do not have any information on the suspects but believes the shooting was intentional.

“It doesn’t appear at this time that it was random. It does seem like it was targeted, but we don’t have any specific information to substantiate it,” he said.

Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to Kepauala Place and administered advanced life support on the two men who suffered gunshot wounds.

They were taken in critical condition to Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center where they were pronounced dead.

Thoemmes said there is more than one suspect involved in the case, but the exact number of perpetrators is unclear at this time.

Police have opened a first-degree murder investigation and have not made any arrests.

Neighbors said they heard at least two gunshots and described the truck that fled the area as a late model Toyota Tacoma.
