A shooting in a close-knit Makiki community Saturday afternoon between neighbors left one dead and the shooter in custody.
Honolulu police blocked off part of a small cul-de-sac at the end of Green Street in Makiki for most of Saturday afternoon after a reported shooting around 2:45 p.m. at the parking lot of one of the cul-de-sac’s apartment buildings.
Killed in the incident
was a 71-year-old woman neighbors identified as
Gloria, who they said was “loved” in the small community made up of residents
of several other apartment buildings. Residents said she would help clean and maintain the grounds of the properties, would take
care of some of the feral
cats that were nearby and was friendly to her neighbors.
They described the shooter as an older male who was “crazy.” Honolulu police described the shooter as an elderly male.
“The old man was not right in the head,” one neighbor said.
Another said “he snapped,” and tried to flee in his car after the shooting.
Those who knew both the victim and shooter were unsure of the motives behind the shooting.
The two lived in separate units at 1067 Green St., a yellow, three-story apartment building.
One neighbor reported hearing three or four gunshots.
Honolulu Emergency Medical Services said the victim was shot multiple times, and HPD said the shooter was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. HPD confirmed that another man also was shot at but was uninjured.
Some of the residents
in the area talked and consoled each other outside as police and medical examiner’s staff monitored and investigated the area where the shooting occurred. Residents said the neighborhood is generally safe and quiet.
