A Circuit Court judge Thursday denied a request for the supervised release of a teen charged with manslaughter in the July purse-snatching death of an 85-year-old Kalihi woman.

Instead, Circuit Judge Shirley Kawamura confirmed the $250,000 bail of Saikit Denny Saingo, 17, who is being charged as an adult with manslaughter in the death of Dolores Corpus and could face life in prison.

The purse snatching occurred during the early morning hours July 21 on Kamehameha IV Road near the intersection of Kini Place.

Corpus was walking with her husband when a bicyclist later identified as Saingo, then 16, snatched her purse and fled.

She sustained head injuries when she fell to the ground, and was taken to a hospital. Her condition worsened and she died five days later.

His attorney requested supervised release or bail reduction, citing that fact that he is only a teenager, has lived here all his life and was supposed to resume studies at Farrington High School.

However, Catherine Lowenberg of the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney argued that he could be a flight risk or a danger to the community based on his “selection of a vulnerable elderly target.”

The judge ordered Saingo to be held at Hale Hoomalu Juvenile Detention Facility until he turns 18.
