Driver of SUV dies after crashing into car stopped on Likelike Highway

The two-vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a 74-year-old man on Likelike Highway on Thursday night involved a car that had stopped to let a Honolulu Fire Department truck clear an intersection.

Honolulu police said at about 8:05 p.m., a 33-year-old driving a Toyota sedan stopped on a northbound lane of Likelike Highway to wait for a Honolulu Fire Department truck to clear the intersection at Kamehameha IV Road.

HFD was responding to an unrelated emergency call with its lights and siren activated.

Police said a 74-year-old man driving a Honda SUV, also traveling Windward-bound, tried to avoid the Toyota sedan and clipped the vehicle’s rear end. The impact caused the Honda to overturn, police said.

The driver of the Toyota sedan and its 2 occupants were uninjured and remained at the scene.

The operator of the Honda SUV died at the scene, police said. Three occupants of the Honda vehicle — all women, ages 41, 66, and 94 — were transported to a hospital in serious condition. Police said their condition later improved.

The collision resulted in the closure of Likelike Highway, Kaneohe-bound, between Kono Street and Kamehameha IV for several hours on Thanksgiving night.

Police continue to investigate the crash, but said speed does not appear to be a factor in this collision, and it remains unknown whether drugs or alcohol were factors.

Honolulu police said this was the 47th traffic fatality for Oahu this year, compared with 59 at the same time last year.
