The Makiki Japanese Cemetery, which was opened in 1868, was restored after years of neglect. Unveiling a new monument to the dead are the Rev. Domyo Fujiki, left, the Rev. Tetsuo Tanaka and contractor Isao Doi. The cemetery at Pensacola Street and Wilder Avenue contains the remains of early immigrants and Japanese naval personnel who died while visiting Hawaii in the 1860s.

Some Aina Haina youngsters staged a haunted house to raise donations for the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund — UNICEF. Mr. and Mrs. Angelo Rossi donated the house, and their children and others in the neighborhood did a good job making it spooky. Here Stanley Rossi, to the right of the skeleton, and Tim Fairbanks, behind the witch doctor mask, are greeted at the door by Mark and Thia Rossi.

STAR-ADVERTISER / FEB. 9, 1960

The Hawaiian flag was raised at the North Pole by Lt. Francis L. Wadsworth, left, and Harold L. Meyer, two Hawaii men aboard the U.S. nuclear-powered submarine Sargo. Earlier, Rear Adm. David M. Tyree, commander of the Naval Support Force at Antarctica, had raised the Hawaiian flag at Murdo Sound near the South Pole.

Henry Hall will be the center of operations for the new four-year, coed program that St. Louis College will offer this fall. The college’s name is to be changed to Chaminade College of Honolulu. It will be the fourth four-year college in Honolulu.

STAR-ADVERTISER / OCT. 7, 1968

Janice Hanato, 8, and Terry Furukawa, 9, previewed a model of the Apollo 7 spaceship that will be on display at Bishop Museum. Also on exhibit is a scale model of the landing vehicle that will be used in the moon landing. (Apollo 7 launched off Cape Canaveral, Fla., on Oct. 11, 1968.)

Mrs. Paul Lemke, her four sisters and a friend reunite around the piano in Lemke’s Kaimuki home. After Lemke’s husband died she asked the five women to live with her. Clockwise, Mrs. Patrick Morris (playing the piano), Lemke, Mrs. Eugene Lessing, Harriet Johnson, Mrs. Charles Cole and Mrs. Allan McGowen.
