Former Hawaii indoor All-American Emily Hartong teamed with Geena Urango to win gold Sunday at the NORCECA Tour beach volleyball event in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
The U.S. pair defeated Canada’s Molly McBain-Becky Thresham 21-19, 21-14 in the final.
Hartong also has been named to the U.S. team for the ANOC World Beach Games next month in Qatar. Joining her on the six-player roster are former Hawaii beach All-Americans Katie Spieler and Karissa Cook, as well as Kelly Reeves, Allie Wheeler and Urango.
The men’s team includes Punahou products Taylor Crabb and brothers Riley and Maddison McKibbin. Also on the roster are Brian Cook, Troy Field and Casey Patterson.
The Association of National Olympic Committees competition is Oct. 12-16. In the U.S. women’s pool are Brazil, Czech Republic and Nigeria. The other pool has Australia, Canada, Vanuatu and Gambia.
The U.S. men’s pool includes Qatar, Germany and Indonesia. The other pool has Poland, Chile, Australia and Mozambique.
Swords’ Roemer named PacWest POW
Chaminade University men’s soccer player Colin Roemer was named the Pacific West Conference men’s soccer Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 15 on Monday.
A Barton Community College transfer and native of Cologne, Germany, Roemer recorded a hat trick in his first game as a Silversword in a 3-0 win at Colorado Christian University on Friday. All three goals were scored in the first half. The hat trick is just the second ever in program history.
Two days later, Roemer scored in the sixth minute to help Chaminade defeat Metro State 3-2. The goal came at the 6:25 mark, which is the third fastest in team history.
He’s the second ever Silversword to earn the conference’s top weekly honor and first since Lukas Pousset in October 2015.
Off to its first 2-0 start, Chaminade takes on Hawaii Pacific in a nonconference match on Sept. 26 at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium, with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
