Five thousand Oahu Catholic schoolchildren, members of the Catholic clergy and guests attend Mass in the Civic Auditorium to commemorate the 71st anniversary of Father Damien’s decision to visit the leprosy settlement on Molokai for Easter Mass in 1873. Speaking from the rostrum is the Rev. George Meinzinger. Seated at the right of Meinzinger is the Most Rev. James J. Sweeney, Catholic bishop of Honolulu, who presided at the Mass. The altar used was the one before which Father Damien was ordained.STAR-ADVERTISER ARCHIVE / MAY 28, 1980
Music’s the medium but money is the message as members of the Honolulu Symphony march through Fort Street Mall in an attempt to drum up financial support. It’s the good life for Ralph Holmes, 29, and Dave Cummings, 22, in the upstairs lounge at the “Diamond Head Country Club.” Despite its imposing name, the country club doesn’t have one overstuffed chair, potted palm or fountain with statues. But passers-by are sometimes fooled by a wooden sign swinging in the breeze outside the white house on Diamond Head Road shared by four fun-loving bachelors. Holmes, Cummings, Ken Wisz, 28, and Jack Kaaua, 29, open their home to a wide array of friends and acquaintances, including a couple dozen “regulars,” for get-togethers including renowned themed parties.STAR-ADVERTISER ARCHIVE / APRIL 4, 1964
