See moon rocks, watch free planetarium shows and launch bottle rockets — all part of a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 and man’s first landing on the moon — Saturday at Windward Community College.

“At Apollo11 Family Spacefest, we hope to ignite the imagination of young people to take risks, explore and learn,” said Joe Ciotti, professor of astronomy, physics and mathematics at WCC. “By following in the footsteps of these courageous astronauts, our keiki will learn that every adventure begins with one small step.”

Spacefest features Many Small Steps, a 50th anniversary NASA exhibit at Gallery Iolani, where the Hawaii State Archives will display Apollo 11 and Apollo 17 moon rocks, and two Hawaiian flags Apollo astronauts placed on the lunar surface, then brought back to Earth and gifted to the people of Hawaii.

The Hokulani Imaginarium, a planetarium on campus, will also screen free shows, including “Astronaut” and “Back to the Moon.” Other activities include space-themed face painting, a photo booth with space props and an Aerospace Exploration Lab with hands-on science activities.
