Kauai fire crews monitor 500-acre brush fire in Poipu

Kauai Fire Department crews remain on scene today to monitor any flare ups from Tuesday’s large brush fire.

Kauai firefighters, with the assistance of various landowners and agencies, extinguished a roughly 500-acre brush fire in Poipu, near the vicinity of Ala Kinoiki, Poipu, and Old Mill roads, on Tuesday.
Kauai fire crews continue to put out the hotspots from Tuesday’s brush fire in Poipu.
Crews had the 500-acre fire under control at around 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday; however, they returned to the scene today when a small fire reignited in the area. Fire crews remain on scene to monitor any flareups.
There are no reported injuries or structural damage, fire officials said.
The fire was first reported at around 3:30 p.m. in the vicinity of Ala Kinoiki, Poipu, and Old Mill roads.
Crews from the Koloa, Kalaheo and Lihue fire stations responded with 24 personnel.
Police temporarily closed Ala Kinoiki from Poipu Road to Weliwli Road, Old Mill Road, and Poipu Road east of Ala Kinoiki intersection.

As a safety precaution, fire officials evacuated residents on Kipuka Street, including all connecting roads, and Weliweli Tract at around 5:20 p.m.
The American Red Cross also opened a shelter due to the evacuation at the Koloa Neighborhood Center. The evacuation was lifted at around 8:50 p.m.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
