DONUTS FOR ALL
If you need an excuse to eat a doughnut — or two, or three — Friday is your day.
National Donut Day, an annual benefit for the Salvation Army, honors the Donut Lassies, who offered aid to soldiers on the front lines during World War I — including making them doughnuts. Their good deeds manifest on the first Friday each June, with the gifting of doughnuts to encourage donations to the Salvation Army.
Stop by one of these doughnut haunts:
>> Regal Bakery: From 6 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Regal is giving each customer a free doughnut and donating a portion of additional sales to the Salvation Army. Costumed “lassies” will take donations in red kettles and pose for photos. The bakery is at 3040 Ualena St. near the airport.
>> Dunkin’ Donuts: From 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., Oahu shops are giving $1 for every dozen doughnuts sold to the charity. Many locations will also have red kettles to take cash donations. Free “munchkins” donuts will be distributed at the Pearl City location.
>> Pipeline Bakeshop & Creamery: From 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., customers purchasing 12 malasadas will receive a 13th free. The shop, at 3632 Waialae Ave. in Kaimuki, will also have a special National Donut Day flavor and will collect donations via red kettle.
>> 7-Eleven Hawaii: On Oahu, an extra-large doughnut will sell for $3.99, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Salvation Army. Stores statewide will collect donations for the cause.
>> Zippy’s: Restaurants are collecting donations through June at locations on Oahu, Maui and Hawaii island.
>> Daylight Donuts: The Kauai shop is giving away free glazed doughnuts from 6 to 11 a.m., and donating a percentage of additional sales.
>> Krispy Kreme: The Maui shop will be accepting donations.

TRADE FOREIGN COINS FOR FOOD
This happens to just about everyone who travels abroad: You get home with a pocketful of yen, or pesos or euros that you just couldn’t spend before flying home.
For three hours — 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday — McDonald’s will trade you any of that currency, in any amount, for food.
The purpose is to introduce McDonald’s new Worldwide Favorites menu:
>> The Stroopwafel McFlurry, a vanilla soft-serve with Dutch Daelmans Stroopwafel caramel cookie pieces
>> Tomato Mozzarella Chicken Sandwich, representing Canada
>> Cheesy Bacon Fries, an Australian-themed side introduced earlier this year
The rules: One trade per customer, at the front counter only (not the drive-thru or a kiosk). Any type of foreign currency, big or small, may be exchanged.
All 73 restaurants in Hawaii are participating in the nationwide promotion.
