Students in grades 6-9 interested in learning more about World War II can engage in a day of history and STEM activities at Midway Youth Day, June 4 at Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum and NOAA’s Daniel K. Inouye Regional Center, both on historic Ford Island. The program commemorates the Battle of Midway, which happened in June 1942.

“The Battle of Midway was a very important battle in World War II, but we don’t know much about it because it happened in the middle of the ocean,” said Shauna Tonkin, director of education and visitor experience at the museum.

Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, which is 1,300 miles from Oahu, was the center of a key battle that was a turning point in the Pacific during the war. Students will learn about the significance of the battle and ongoing efforts to protect and preserve the site, Tonkin said.
