Mother, son found guilty of animal cruelty at no-kill shelter

ROB SHIKINA / 2017

Honolulu police and animal control officials raided the Friends for Life shelter on Oct. 12, 2017.

A state jury found David “Lanny” Moore guilty this afternoon of 24 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty and his mother June Moore guilty of one count in connection with the seizure of more than 300 dogs from their Friends for Life no-kill animal shelter in Makaha.

After hearing the verdicts, Circuit Judge Edward Kubo Jr. charged David Moore with contempt for violating previous court orders and ordered him taken into custody on $5,000 cash-only bail. He scheduled a hearing on the contempt charge and sentencing for the animal cruelty tomorrow morning.

Kubo also ordered June Moore taken into custody on $3,000 cash-only bail pending sentencing. He withdrew his order after June Moore’s lawyer asked Kubo to reconsider and Deputy Prosecutor Janice Futa had no objection to letting Moore remain free pending tomorrow’s sentencing.
