Travel back in time to the world of ancient China via Shen Yun, an epic theatrical experience with performances Saturday and Sunday at Blaisdell Concert Hall. Shen Yun can be translated as “the beauty of heavenly beings dancing,” which offers a hint of what’s in store for audiences.
Shen Yun showcases classical Chinese dance with an orchestra blending Chinese and Western musical instruments, and features legends and stories from 5,000 years of Chinese culture, said Hong Jiang, who has helped coordinate volunteers in Honolulu in support of the show since 2008.
“Its path-breaking backdrop technology and gorgeous costumes help set the scenes for a magical journey through Chinese culture,” Jiang said.
This is the 11th year Shen Yun has come to Honolulu and with a new show each time.
Shen Yun nurtures the hearts of all ages with its stories of goodness, courage, beauty and hope, noted Jiang, who is also an associate professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
“By presenting themes from different time periods (dynasties) and different ethnic groups, Shen Yun offers unique educational values on Chinese culture and history,” she said.
