Commemorate Earth Day learning how to care for our aina and community — through student presentations, interactive exhibits by conservation groups and keiki activities such as butterfly encounters, natural egg dying and ti leaf lei making — at the Ola Na Kini Earth Day Hoolaulea, Saturday at Nanakuli Public Library and hosted by Malama Learning Center. The Ola Na Kini initiative launched in 2017 to support the restoration of forests and watersheds around West Oahu.
The goal of the event “is to celebrate the accomplishments of our Ola Na Kini students as they explored solutions to issues affecting the land and sea, and engage the entire community in caring for the environment,” said Pauline Sato, executive and program director of Malama Learning Center.
The program will feature presentations by students participating in the Ola Na Kini program from Ka Waihona O Ka Naauao Public Charter School, Kamaile Academy, Nanakuli High & Intermediate School and Kapolei, Waianae and Waipahu high schools.
There will also be educational exhibits by Mililani High School’s Youth Envisioning Sustainable Futures program, student entertainment and farm-to-table food tastings.
“We will help people understand the value of planting native trees as well as culturally important and edible plants that reduce erosion, restore watersheds, preserve Hawaiian culture and reduce the effects of climate change,” Sato said.
